World AIDS Day: A Global Partnership of Prayer

1st December marks World AIDS Day. While events aiming to promote public awareness and education on HIV/AIDS are organised all around the world, a coalition of Christian organisations and networks call all people to unite in prayers to end AIDS - one of the most threatening tumours in this era.

The Global AIDS Prayer Partnership (GAPP) is a U.S. based initiative developed through the leadership of many ministries and networks including Mission America Coalition, World Vision, International Prayer Council, National Prayer Committee, National Pastors Prayer Network, and Concerts of Prayer Greater New York.

GAPP invites people throughout the world to remember the many millions who are fighting against AIDS. It supports the individuals who want to be a prayer partner by offering a 31 Day prayer guide. It is available in three versions, two as a downloadable resource at the website and the other one is sent via email on a weekly basis.

Churches are also being encouraged to hold a special prayer vigil on World AIDS Day and use a specially prepared bulletin available at the website. Holding onto the promise of God from 2 Chronicles 7: 14, GAPP believes that as the Church of Jesus Christ unites for prayer and action, God will be faithful and heal the nations.

It is believed that 38 million people in the world are infected with HIV. Last year, 3 million died of AIDS-related illness. Everyday, there are 14,000 new infections, more than half of which attack people between the ages of 15 and 24.

While Africa has the highest rate of AIDS infection in the world, the sharpest jumps in new cases are being seen in China and Eastern Europe. Moreover, the number of British people infected is still on the rise, standing currently at 53,000 adults.
