Windows 10 release date: What to expect for PCs and tablets

 Microsoft blog

Microsoft has finally put a date for the release of the highly-anticipated next-gen operating system, Windows 10.

In a post on the official Microsoft blog, Terry Myerson, the tech giant's vice president of operating systems, said that the new platform will arrive on July 29. The new platform will be available first in its PC edition, and users who want to upgrade will be able to get Windows 10 for free.

Myerson wrote, "On July 29, you can get Windows 10 for PCs and tablets by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer, or on a new Windows 10 PC from your favorite retailer."

The upgrade will also be available for new purchases of Windows 8.1.

Myerson added, "If you purchase a new Windows 8.1 device between now and then, the Windows 10 upgrade will be available to you and many retail stores will upgrade your new device for you."

Many fans are eagerly waiting for the new platform to arrive due to the hype on its new features. According to Microsoft, the new Windows 10 will harken the arrival of Cortana, Microsoft's proprietary digital assistant. Cortana will help users streamline their digital work by learning the user's preferences and providing fast access, relevant information, and will also work on delivering important reminders on both the user's PC and synced smartphone.

In addition, the new Windows 10 will introduce Edge, the new browser that Microsoft replaced Internet Explorer with. It has an integrated type-and-ink feature that lets users comment or take notes directly on the browser itself.

Aside from the two new features, Microsoft will be updating the Office Suite to make it more interactive for users. The new Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and other Office apps have been redesigned and revamped, incorporating touch controls for touch-screen displays.
