Fans who are waiting for a sequel to the hacker role-playing title "Watch Dogs" will be glad to know that "Watch Dogs 2" is happening and confirmed for a 2017 release at the latest.

According to Examiner, developer Ubisoft confirmed that as what has been previously rumored, "Watch Dogs 2" is in the pipeline. Reportedly, the new sequel will be coming out sometime during the fiscal year of 2016-2017, which places its release date between April this year and March next year.

Although the developer has yet to peg a specific release date for "Watch Dogs 2," the industry follower reckoned that the role-playing game will most likely release during the holidays, since it is believed that the sequel will fill in for the absence of an "Assassin's Creed" installment this year.

Even Alain Martinez, CFO of Ubisoft, believes that the next "Watch Dogs" game can take over the popularity of "Assassin's Creed."

Martinez said, "We do believe that if we look at both 'Watch Dogs' and 'Ghost Recon' that they will exceed the revenue of both 'Assassin's Creed' and 'The Division'...even if we think 'The Division' are going to be great games because they will be released at the end of the year."

Ubisoft already confirmed that outside of some spin-off titles and a live action film offshoot, there will be no new "Assassin's Creed" offering for 2016. In a company post on the official Ubisoft blog, it is stated that rather than concentrate on a yearly release, "We're taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we're delivering on the promise of 'Assassin's Creed' offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone's playground."

Meanwhile, aside from "Watch Dogs 2," it is also confirmed that a number of new titles will be released by Ubisoft this coming financial year, including "Ghost Recon: Wildlands," "South Park: The Fractured but Whole," and "For Honor."
