Mario Chalmers still has no idea what lies ahead for him in the coming NBA season, with no team looking into a possible trade for the veteran guard. But then again, there could be one sensible destination for the 29-year-old guard — the Utah Jazz.
The Jazz are dark horse bets in reaching the NBA playoffs, but that was before 2015 pick Dante Exum went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing for Australia in an international exhibition match against Slovenia.
The injury, thus, counts Exum out for the coming season and the Jazz could use some help improving their backcourt.
Could Chalmers fit the bill?
Given that no other team has expressed interest in Chalmers, the Jazz could end up signing Chalmers. Although it may come at a hefty price ($4.3 million), the good news is that it would be the final year of Chalmers' contract.
If Chalmers proves his worth, the Jazz could opt to renegotiate and retain him after the coming season. If not, they can let Chalmers walk after the season.
Chalmers, when given the opportunity, has proven that he can orchestrate and deliver on the floor. He is a veteran and his experience could reap dividend for the Jazz if he can sync in with the system of head coach Quin Snyder.
Aside from his contributions, Chalmers could also end up mentoring the team's rising point guard Trey Burke as well. From the looks of it, Chalmers could eventually back up Burke or even play alongside the 22-year-old point guard since Chalmers does carry firepower, which could provide the Jazz with more offensive options.
For now, Chalmers heading to Utah is a possibility. Chalmers will most likely be included in the list of alternative point guards whom the Jazz are considering.
Aside from Chalmers, the Jazz are reportedly also looking at Garrett Temple as well.
