'Under the Dome' season 4 cancelled: Series concludes Sept. 10, not renewed

 CBS

"Under the Dome" season 3 will be the final season of the hit sci-fi series. CBS has announced that it will be wrapped up on Sept. 10 with the episode titled "The Enemy Within." The announcement came less than two weeks before the actual end, which made the news quite a shock to fans.

About the cancellation, CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said in a press release picked up by IGN, "Two years ago, 'Under the Dome' broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world.

"'Dome''s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of 'Extant' and 'Zoo'."

The network promises that all the mysteries brought up will be given resolution in the season 3 finale. Tassler added that the network is "excited" to reveal to fans how Chester's Mill's story ends as it "comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up."

She added that fans aching to know the Dome's origin and its power will be satisfied when the series comes to a close. These answers will come as the two blocs take part in "one final conflict that some won't survive."

"Under the Dome" is based on Stephen King's bestselling novel of the same name. It aired its pilot back in 2013. It started strong and it was deemed one of the most stellar summer showings that year. Over the course of the series, however, the viewership and the rating started to drop, according to Variety.

From a 2.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 11.2 million viewers in the first season, it nose-dived to 1.6 and 7.2 million by the second season. Currently, according to the numbers collected daily by Zap2it from Nielsen TV Ratings, it's at a 1.0 rating in the same demo with only 4.9 million viewers, a little over half the number of viewers that tuned in to season 2.

The finale of "Under the Dome" season 3 airs Sept. 10. The synopsis reads: "As the Dome in Chester's Mill comes down, the Resistance makes a final attempt to protect the outside world from the infected townspeople in the Kinship and their new queen, on the third season finale of 'Under the Dome'."
