True Detective season 3 spoilers: Season 3 delayed to 2018? Matthew McConaughey interested in return

Fans who are worried that True Detective 3 may never see the light of day after all should rest assured that it will happen, but not as soon as they expect.

According to rumors, there is a possibility the show will be pushed back to a 2018 airing since its producer Nic Pizzolatto has signed on to become the executive producer and writer for another HBO series that will be topbilled by Robert Downey Jr., reported Game N' Guide

The new series is expected to be a reboot of award winning series Perry Mason which aired from 1957 to 1966.

Aside from Downey, his wife Susan and Joe Horacek are also reported to star in the new series.

According to a report by Vulture, Casey Bloys, HBO president for programming, said that they are considering other methods to push forward with the show, even getting on new writers for the show to be supervised by Pizzolatto while he works on the other show.

"It is not dead, but there's no take on a third season yet," he said.

However, the break might actually do the series some good and give Pizzolatto ample time to develop the third season in his own pace.

It can be recalled that the second season of the crime series was widely panned by critics for failing to meet the standards of the first season.

Former president for programming Michael Lombardo owned up to the cable network's role in the poor showing of the sophomore season.

"Our biggest failures—and I don't know if I would consider True Detective—but when we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it's ready, when it's baked—we've failed. And I think in this particular case, the first season of True Detective was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time," he said.

For his part, Matthew McConaughey, who played Season 1's Rust Cohle, said he misses his character and even reached out to his former collaborator to talk about a possible reprisal of his role for Season 3.
