'True Detective' season 3 renewed or cancelled? HBO mum about new season

True Detective Season 2 HBO

"True Detective" season 2 wrapped up last Sunday, but according to reports, it wasn't much of a feat for HBO. Website i09 says that the sophomore run did not have as much impact and focus as the first one did, although it did manage to intermingle every storyline it presented.

HBO has yet to say a word on whether or not "True Detective" season 3 is happening. Carter Matt says that it isn't unprecedented for the network to not talk about the next season this early as it also waited for a while after the success of season 1 before official discussions about season 2 were set in motion.

The site also noticed that creator Nic Pizzolatto has not done any interviews after the finale, recalling that he did a few after season 1 came to a close. Carter Matt concludes that Pizzolatto knows that he will be bombarded with questions about what the critics are saying about the season.

The last time the network discussed "True Detective" season 3 was through HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, who said during this year's Television Critics Association press tour that it's all up to Pizzolatto, who he described as "one of the best writers working in film or television right now."

"If he wants to do another season, I said the door is open," Lombardo said via Deadline. "We'd like to do another season of it."

Up to now, fans of the crime anthology await the verdict. But in the event that there will be a third season, i09 hopes to see a much better location choice as this could be a key element that will get the show back on track.

Meanwhile, Indiewire thinks that season 2's uber-brooding aura took its toll. The site says that "True Detective" season 3 will be much better if it had at least a certain wit in it but not to the point of being wacky.
