"The Vampire Diaries" episode 10 will take a look back at the Civil War with Damon at its center, Facebook/CW

Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and his vampire history will be unveiled in the tenth episode of "The Vampire Diaries" (TVD) season 7.

The actor let slip the major spoiler during his interview with Variety, when he was being asked about what the fans could expect for the next episodes of the series from The CW. He said that Damon will be featured in a Civil War, and it will be a departure from the usual "teen vampire soap opera" that they usually do. The installment will also reportedly look back at Damon's past and how he came to be a vampire.

Somerhalder was full of praise for the creators and writers of the show after coming up with what he thought is "the best" episode yet. He shared that everything about it is "so on-point," from the moment the story was conceptualized until its production. Somerhalder also hinted that this is the start of the evolution of the series with regard to storyline and overall picture.

"It was the first time since early on in season one when it was just Kevin (Williamson) and Julie (Plec) staying up till four in the morning writing... And yes, it's a teen vampire soap opera, I get that. But those episodes and the way they're being written and the way they're getting shot, I'm grateful for it," he said.

When asked about Nina Dobrev leaving the show, he admitted that all of them in TVD worried how it would be "a huge departure" from the usual "formula" the series has been known for. The actor shared that the creators had to do certain changes to accommodate the fact that the female protagonist Elena was gone.

Meanwhile, starting Jan. 29, the supernatural drama series will follow a different schedule. Instead of Thursdays, fans can get their weekly dose of sexy vampires during Fridays. The CW has announced that TVD and its sister show "The Originals" will be moved from their time slot after the winter break. The International Business Times reports that the news worried fans, as they fear that the show will be cancelled after season 7.

Based on statistics, the website posits that they indeed have something to worry about, as TVD does not have as much viewers as when it started back in 2009. Season 1 has reportedly enjoyed 3.6 million followers, whereas the current installment is only averaging 1.2 million so far.

Before its winter hiatus, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will still air Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
