'The Night Shift' Season 4 renewed or cancelled? fate of characters hang in balance after cliffhanger

 NBC

While the renewal of The Night Shift for its fourth season hangs in the balance, numbers are pulling in for the finale of Season 3, and so are the questions.

According to ratings posted by TV series finale, the last episode raked in 5.247 million viewers and posted a 1.0 rating in 18-49 demographic. On average, the season managed to garner 4.998 views with 0.98 rating for the 18-49 demographic, considered the most important target market by the networks.

Compared to the show's second season, which averaged 1.29 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.29 million total viewers, the numbers for the season dropped slightly.

Fans of the show are holding out hope though that the show will be renewed for the fourth outing given the number of cliffhangers presented in the season 3 finale.

Among the questions left unanswered was whether or not TC and Syd would survive the bombing. Another question is what Paul and the other members of the ER staff will do after leaving their posts.

Showrunner Jeff Judah said that the finale was actually intended as such, as they wanted to provide a balance of answers and conclusions for the characters of the show since they do not know the fate of the show until they are officially picked up for renewal.

"There are actually things we left out, because we didn't know if we were picked up. We didn't want to make it all big cliffhangers and all big angst because if it wasn't picked up, we wanted to give some satisfaction in some ways. There were things that were going to happen with maybe Drew and Brianna and Rick, and we thought that really just deserved a happy ending," he said.

He however, maintained that they were still the #1 scripted show of the summer so they are pretty satisfied with their showing.
