The Avengers breaks $1bn at box office

The Avengers has broken another box office record after taking in $1 billion worldwide.

The action-packed superhero movie already had the highest opening weekend after taking in $103.2 million in the US alone.

Now it's bagged the record for the biggest second weekend sales as well, after amassing $373.2 million in domestic sales and another $628.9 internationally just 19 days after it opened.

The Marvel blockbuster bumped Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s vampire flick, Dark Shadows, into a distant second with domestic sales of $28.8 million.

The Avengers stars Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow.

The previous top seller on a second weekend was Avatar, with $75.6 million.

Christian educational charity Damaris Trust has produced a discussion guide to help people talk through some of the themes that emerge in the film.
