Alison (Ruth Wilson) will be dealing with a lot of things when the Showtime series "The Affair" returns for its third season, one being fiancé Noah's (Dominic West) admission that he alone was responsible for Scotty's (Colin Donnell) death.

During the season 2 finale, the writer admitted to hitting Scotty while driving on a foggy narrow road. According to his testimony, he and former wife Helen (Maura Tierney) just left Cole (Joshua Jackson) and Luisa's (Catalina Sandino Moreno) wedding that night when their car hit something. It turned out to be Scotty, who was so drunk he could barely walk straight. It was an accident, as Scotty suddenly materialized at the middle of the road.

What Noah did not admit was that he was not driving that night and that someone else was responsible for putting Scotty in that very road. Helen was the behind the wheel when the car hit Scotty. They exchanged places when Noah said he was too strung up to drive. When Noah got out of the vehicle to check, he spotted Alison hiding in the bushes. Alison confessed that she pushed Scotty toward the road when he tried to rape her.

In Alison's version, she ran out of the party to take a breather after confessing to Noah that Joanie was not his daughter. She said she encountered a completely stoned Scotty on the road, where he tried yet again to convince Alison to back him up with Cole. Scotty wanted to be included in the business deal with the Lobster Roll. His brother assured him he would be a partner if he went into rehab. It turned out Cole had no intention of fulfilling his promise.

When Alison refused to help him, Scotty turned violent and tried to force himself on her. What she did was purely out of self-defense. She did not see the car coming and never expected that it would hit Scotty. During the trial, however, Noah turned the tables around by taking the rap for everything. Next season, Jackson hinted to HNGN that the episodes would focus on the resolution of what transpired in the finale.

"There is a place where these people come to a sense of resolution and I think that's what the third chapter would be about," the actor said.

"The Affair" Season 3 will premiere sometime in 2016 on Showtime.
