This weekend, shopping will be literally tax-free. The special holiday, although initially intended for back-to-school items only, offers up discounted prices for other types of items as well. Twelve states will participate in the shopping event, which started on August 7.
These include Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, Louisiana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. These states apply unique rules during the tax-free weekend.
Alabama lifts the tax off certain school supplies, computers and clothing. Florida offers no tax to clothing that costs up to $100 as well as other items like diapers, bags and purses. Iowa removes the tax on clothing and footwear that costs up to $100.
Those who will shop in Missouri this weekend will be able to buy the most expensive computers, the ones priced up to $3,500 each without tax. As well as software that costs up to $300, clothing up to $100 and school supplies up to $50 per purchase.
Louisiana is offering all "tangible" personal property except for business items, tax-free. In New Mexico, computers that cost $1,000 and hardware up to $500 will not have tax charges so does clothing and school supplies.
Ohio's tax-free weekend only covers clothing priced at $75 max and $20 and below school supplies. For Oklahoma, clothing and footwear that cost $100 and below (except for athletics) will be tax-free. South Carolina has the clothing, bedding items, computers, printers and bathroom décor all tax-free.
In Tennessee, shoppers will not pay the taxes for computers that costs $1,500 as well as clothing and school supplies that cost less than $100. Texas will not add taxes to any clothing, backpacks and school supplies with less than a $100 price tag. Virginia goes tax-free for clothing that costs up to $100 per item and school supplies that costs more than $20.
Tax-free weekend started last August 7 and will run until tomorrow, August 9.
