Three renowned automobile manufacturers in Germany, namely BMW, Volkswagen, and Daimler AG, will now do their share of recalling units equipped with the defective Takata Corporation airbags.
The recent issue regarding Takata Corporation began in 2013 when a number of other automobile companies recalled vehicles with dysfunctional airbags.
Now, these companies from Germany will be recalling units that has Takata Corporation airbags installed on them that were deemed "defective" in January.
The three announced the recall of around 2.5 million vehicles in the United States, with Volkswagen recalling 850,000 vehicles, and BMW and Daimler AG recalling 840,000 vehicles each.
In a report by Car and Driver on its website, it was stated that the issues with the Takata Corporation airbags are defective inflator and propellant devices which might hinder the bag to function properly when a crash occurs, with metal pieces being ejected once the bag is deployed.
The report added that the airbag failure affected around 34 million vehicles in the United States and seven million vehicles were already recalled worldwide.
Along with BMW, Volkswagen, and Daimler AG, other brands that are facing the same trouble involving Takata Corporation are Acura, Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge (Ram), Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Saab, Subaru, and Toyota.
According to the report by Reuters, the recent recall was sparked by two factors. First is the death of a Ford Ranger pickup driver back in December 2015, and the second are the new tests on the said airbags.
The report added that the death toll connected with Takata Corporation airbags already reached 10 counts across the globe, nine of those victims are from the United States, where a major recalling is happening in the past few years.
In those 10 incidents involving the faulty airbags, nine were using Honda-manufactured vehicles.
