When Supernatural season 12 returns on The CW, fans of Castiel (Misha Collins) will finally get their wish as the show will feature standalone episodes that revolve around the angel.

In an interview with showrunner Andrew Dabb, he revealed that as the show enters its twelfth season, Castiel's backstory will be explored further and that there will be new revelations about the character's past that will come to light.

"That's very heavily about Castiel and the journey he's been on. Some things from his past that we're not aware of are getting brought to light," Dabb told Entertainment Weekly.

Dabb added that the twelfth episode for the upcoming season will be the most Castiel-centric. He also teased that fans should be prepared to see Cas in full battle mode as being possessed by Lucifer in the last season of the show seemed to be the last straw for the angel, and he will be wanting to get his revenge.

Speaking of Cas, he is also expected to form a deep connection with the Winchesters' mother Mary, who has returned from the dead at the end of season 11. In a separate interview with TVLine, Dabb explained that the connection will be rooted in their common feelings,

"They're both strangers in a strange land, in a way," he said.

Meanwhile, God (Rob Benedict) and Amara (Emily Swallow) are still going to make an appearance in season 12 but will be biding their time before they surface anew. Dabb said that God trusts the Winchesters more than he trusts himself so it is expected that they will be tasked with another important mission at some point in the season.

Aside from God, the Darkness and Lucifer, the Winchesters will also have their plates full in dealing with the Men of Letters, reported Yibada.

"Supernatural" season 12 returns on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
