Supernatural season 12 spoilers: Mary Winchester adds an interesting dynamic

 The CW

With its renewal for its twelfth season, Supernatural officially became the longest running North American fantasy series, but after fighting off a myriad of mythical creatures, slaying monsters, demons, squaring off with angels, stopping the Apocalypse, dealing with the King of Hell and facing off with God himself, what's next for the Winchester brothers and their extended family?

According to Executive Producer Andrew Dabb, the road is far from over for the Winchesters as Season 12 brings back one of the characters integral to the origins of the Winchester boys -- their mom Mary.

"Since Mary wasn't around for most of the boys' lives, she's been mythologized to them," [But] she has a lot in common with them [as hunters]. She'll be coming back into that," Dabb told TVLine.

Jensen Ackles also said that Mary's return would present an interesting dynamic because she and the boys will be trying to build a relationship that is actually nonexistent given the amount of time that has passed since she died.

The CW is also pulling all the stops for the 12th season as the Supernatural team brings in Rick Springfield to become the new Lucifer.

The announcement was made during the Supernatural panel at the San Diego Comic Con.

"The first vessel that [Lucifer] feels comfortable with is a rock star who's a little bit on the down side who's trying to come back," Executive Producer Robert Singer explained.

Dabb said Springfield was perfect for the role of Lucifer, a strong character formerly portrayed by Mark Pellegrino. For a while, Lucifer also inhabited Sam and Castiel in previous seasons so they needed an equally strong actor to play the part.

Springfield will play the role of Vince Vicente, a washed up rocker who will be the fallen angel's latest vessel. They  wanted a real life rocker who could act. to play the part so Springfield fit the bill perfectly.

"If you've seen 'Ricki and The Flash' or 'True Detective' recently, he's really great," Dabb said, referring to Sprinfield's acting credits.
