The Winchesters are in for a rough time in season 13 of "Supernatural." The brothers will be separated this time not from each other, but from another Winchester family member.

The CW's "Supernatural" will follow demon-hunting duo Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) going through this season without their mother Mary (Samantha Smith) since she fell through the rip between worlds in the season 12 finale.

"Supernatural" executive producer and director Andrew Dabb told Variety about how the two will have to live without several of their closest friends as well.

"This will be the most alone Sam and Dean have been," Dabb said. "They don't have Castiel [Misha Collins], they don't have Crowley [Mark Sheppard], they don't have Mom, they don't have Rowena [Ruth Connell]. They have each other and this weird kid who could probably kill them if he wanted to."

Paledecki, in an interview with Metro, also said that they are pretty much alone now, but that the root of all their alliances has always been Sam and Dean.

"As long as they have each other and know what they're fighting for, their objectives are very clear," the actor said.

Of course, this is still unfortunate, as the two would have really benefited from the presence of their accomplices. In season 13, Sam and Dean will want to find out how powerful Jack (Alexander Calvert) truly is.

Whether or not Jack will help the duo has not yet been reported; although, he will be a kind of blank slate that Sam and Dean can work with.

Although they will be without their mom, the two will still have a chance to play role models to Jack.

Dabb said that while season 12 was about the brothers being kids, the upcoming season will see the two as parental figures.

As to when and where Castiel will re-enter the photo, Dabb said he won't be popping up immediately.

The director said that since Castiel is a big part of the brothers' lives, it is necessary for the story to have Sam and Dean mourn the loss of their friend first.

"They have to marinate a little bit and feel the loss," Dabb said. "So even when he makes his triumphant return as a changed character, they'll have an even bigger reaction."

"Supernatural" season 13 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 12, 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
