Samsung is pushing to cover all ends of the smartphone market. Fresh from its release of new premium flagships like the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+, the South Korea-based tech company is reportedly releasing a unit on the other end of the spectrum.
According to rumors that sprung from supposed leaks online, there will be a new, budget-friendly, low-end Galaxy J1 successor.
In a report by GSM Arena, the purported follow-up has been seen passing an FCC certification in the United States. While some observers have tagged the successor to be a Galaxy J1 "Mini," the website disclosed that instead of a smaller unit, the new Galaxy J1 follow-up has been listed as having a 4.5-inch display. This is slightly bigger than the 4.3-inch display that the current Galaxy J1 has been integrated with.
Meanwhile, Phone Arena reported that based on leaked benchmark scores for the unit with model number SM-J105F, the next Samsung Galaxy entry-level device will have a Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset with 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, at least 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal storage. It will also carry a main 5-MP rear camera, and a VGA shooter on the front. Reportedly, the unit will come out running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop right out of the box.
Phone Arena also indicated that the Spreadtrum website already listed the device, which was tagged as the "Samsung Galaxy J1 Mini."
While the benchmark scores and other purported leaked documents have not designated the unit as the next-in-line to the low-end J-series, observers have noted the model number and specs sheet closely follow that of the original Galaxy J1, which has a model number of SM-J100F when it was being tested.
It is unclear, however, if the upcoming entry-level device from Samsung will be released globally, or as a low-end device for targeted markets only.
