'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' cast: Orlando Bloom to return as Will Turner

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Disney

During Disney's D23 Expo, Walt Disney Studios President Sean Bailey officially announced that actor Orlando Bloom will be reprising his role as Will Turner for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," the fifth title in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Bailey did not reveal any information regarding Bloom's role in the film, nor did he confirm if Bloom will be returning for future sequels, which are speculated to be shot back-to-back – similar to how the second and third films were done.

However, fellow cast member Brenton Thwaites told The Mirror back in January that the film would center around a young man trying to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones. This points directly to Will Turner who was last seen inheriting the Flying Dutchman as the "new" Davy Jones while his wife Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) was left to raise their son.

Neither Bailey nor Bloom confirmed Thaites' statement so it is possible that Will Turner may be in as a father reconnecting with his son, an ally to Jack Sparrow, or both.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," which is touted as a soft reboot for the franchise, centers on the return of the pirate Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) who is determined to kill every pirate in the world. Jack Sparrow will journey to retrieve the Trident of Poseidon to stop him.

According to Screen Rant, it is likely that Will Turner will be able to use his powers over the seas to help Sparrow in his quest. Given how he cannot step on land but for one day every decade, he won't be able to join Sparrow if the Trident is hidden in an island, but he can use his powers to see where it is, even if it is buried in the deepest depths of the oceans.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
