The mysterious death of British socialite Peaches Geldof was explained today. Toxicology results reveal that heavy, recent heroin use contributed to the 25-year old's passing.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Fotheringham made the announcement at a May 1 hearing in Kent, England.
"Recent use of heroin and the levels identified were likely to have played a role in her death," Fotheringham said.
The former journalist was found dead in her home in Kent on April 7. Police originally classified her passing as "sudden and unexplained."
Chief Inspector Fotheringham told reporters that Geldof's loved ones did not think anything was different about her in the days leading toward her death.
"All of the friends and family who had contact with Peaches during this period described how she seemed her normal self and was making plans for the future, including a family outing for her sons for the following weekend," he said. "There was no cause for concern."
Geldof's body was discovered by her husband, punk band S.C.U.M. frontman Thomas Cohen. When police searched the home, no drug paraphernalia was found. There is speculation that evidence may have been hidden or removed before police arrived.
In addition to her writing, Geldof also had a successful modeling career—walking in London Fashion Week and becoming the face of "Miss Ultimo." She was dropped from the brand after nude photos and allegations of heroin use surfaced online. A representative for the socialite denied the rumors.
The British beauty admitted to experimenting with drugs in 2012, but said that thoughts of her mother kept her from losing herself.
"I could have let myself spiral but all the time I remembered what happened to my mum," Geldof told Elle in an interview.
The late socialite's mother, Paula Yates, died in 2000 of a heroin overdose. Geldof was 11 at the time.
Just hours before she was found dead, Geldof posted a photo of herself and her mother to her Instagram account.
In addition to her husband, father, and three sisters, Geldof leaves behind two sons.
Cohen said that he will make sure his boys, Astala, 2, and Phaedra, 1, know their mother.
"I shall bring them up with their mother in their hearts every day," he wrote in a statement. "We shall love her forever."
