OnePlus 2 release date, specs rumors: Launch set for July 27

Although casual smartphone users might not be that familiar with the name OnePlus — not with names like Samsung, Apple, and others dominating the market — some got to know the company because of the success of its flagship, the OnePlus One, released last year. This year, the Chinese manufacturer will follow-up the previous version's success with the rollout of the OnePlus 2.

It was rumored early this year that the China-based company is targeting the latter part of 2015, either in September or October, to launch its new device, to coincide with launch of new flagships from other manufacturers such as the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the new iPhone from Apple. There were even reports that company co-founder Carl Pei confirmed the release to be in the third quarter of the year.

However, it seems that since everything is ready on their end, OnePlus will be jumping the gun a little earlier than expected.

It is already confirmed that on a unique virtual-reality presentation, the OnePlus 2 will be unveiled on July 27. According to the countdown post on the official OnePlus blog, those who have virtual reality headsets such as the OnePlus Cardboards that were already sold out will be able to take advantage of the VR presentation launch. Meanwhile, those who do not have that much time to wait and watch the keynote can download a proprietary app and watch the release at a later time.

The upcoming OnePlus 2 is touted to be bigger and better than its predecessor, which was launched last year as a "premium smartphone killer." The higher-than-average specs of the One was given a competitive price, and the company hopes to at least equal or exceed fans' expectations with the OnePlus 2, with its 4 GB of RAM and an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor used in other high-end smartphone brands.
