NVIDIA GTX 1060 Vs. AMD RX 480 DX12: leak reveals results of 3DMark's Time Spy benchmark test

Futuremark developed its 3DMark Time Spy to accommodate DirectX 12 in its benchmark test. It was developed from the ground up, working together with many tech companies, NVIDIA, Intel, Microsoft and AMD. Now, the results are finally out for the NVIDIA GTX 1060 and AMD RX 480.

WCCFTech reported that both NVIDIA GTX 1060 and AMD RX 480 were tested with five games: "Hitman," "Rise of the Tomb Raider 3," " Just Cause 3," "Call Of Duty Black Ops 3" and "DOOM." It also mentioned that the test conducted were performed with different screen resolutions, namely, 4K, 1440p and 1080p. Asynchronous compute was also turned on and off.

Generally speaking, the NVIDIA GTX 1060 triumphantly achieved a higher score in the 3DMark Time Spy DirectX 12 test than the AMD RX 480, at 4010 points versus 3629 points with Async compute off, and 4166 points against 3929 with Async compute on. However, the result also points out that the AMD's GCN architecture delivered a significant increase of 7.7 percent compared to NVIDIA's 3.9 percent when Async compute was turned on, which is a big plus for AMD. The GTX 1080 and R9 Fury were also included during the test, in which the NVIDIA card came on top, followed by the R9.

It was also not mentioned during the testing phase what kind of NVIDIA card was tested, either the Founder's Edition or custom models, but this is a great guide for those planning to purchase their next GPU regarding where the GTX 1060 stands.

Meanwhile, Eurogamer mentioned that Futuremark stated, "For benchmarks to be relevant and useful tools, they must be fair, impartial and unbiased."

The company added, "This is why 3DMark Time Spy, and all other Futuremark benchmarks, are developed with industry-leading hardware and software partners through our Benchmark Development Program using a process that's been government-vetted for fairness and neutrality. The process ensures that our benchmarks are accurate, relevant and impartial."

For the meantime, fans can expect more benchmark results of the new GPU to arrive in the very near future as NVIDIA's GTX 1080 was officially released last July 19.
