The historic New Year's Eve ball drop will take place at Times Square, with up to a billion people expected to watch the big ball sliding down the pole at the strike of midnight on New Year's Eve.

This year, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor has been chosen to press the button that activates the 60-second ball drop. Over a million spectators are expected to gather at Times Square to watch the dazzling ball descend to bring in the New Year.

Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins said in a statement: "Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014. Who better to join us in the Crossroads of the World than one of New York's own."

Check out the Times Square NYC Facebook page to see updates on the New Year's ball.

The ball drop will be available to watch live online via an app for iPhones and Android devices. The app lets users interact with the Times Square Ball on Twitter, watch live streaming of the Times Square New Year's Celebration, and customize the countdown clock to individual time zones.

The app description reads: "The Official Times Square Ball App is your exclusive access to be part of the activities in Times Square as you watch the LIVE official show featuring musical performances, celebrity appearances, reveler interviews, hourly countdowns and the midnight Ball Drop!"

A live webcast can also be seen here. The live webcast will start at 6 p.m and will feature an exclusive clip from the upcoming Amazing Spiderman movie.
