Mrs Doubtfire 2 sequel cancelled? Director Columbus releases statement

 20th Century Fox

Plans for a sequel to the hit 1993 film 'Mrs Doubtfire' were underway just months before the tragic death of actor and comedian Robin Williams on August 11, 2014.

It was revealed that Fox 2000 studio was developing a sequel to the movie, which would have involved Robin Williams, who had starred as a father who dressed up like an old woman to be closer to his children.

The script for the sequel was being written by David Berenbaum.

'Mrs. Doubtfire' director Chris Columbus released a statement to Variety upon news of the actor's death.

"His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place. He truly was one of the few people who deserved the title of 'genius,'" Columbus stated.

Original cast members including Matthew Lawrence, who played Williams' character's son Chris were set to be on board, including Lisa Jakub, who starred as Lydia Hillard.

Both played the children of Williams' character.

"I hope they make the second as good as the first. The first was so good. It will be great to get the family back together," Lawrence had told TMZ.

Jakub told the Huffington Post: "I'm in the same boat as a lot of other people. I'm kind of wondering how they're going to come up with a storyline that's going to do the project justice. But I feel like if anybody can come up with something that is both hilarious and also very meaningful, it is going to be this team. We'll just have to see where they'll take the plot. Nobody has talked to me about the sequel, so I really don't know what I would say.'

However, Mara Wilson, who played the youngest daughter Natalie, was not set to join the sequel. "For the record, no, I do not have anything to do with the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, nor will I," she had tweeted. "I've been in some mediocre movies, but I've never been in a sequel. And I have no interest in being in one now. Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end. I'm glad I had the chance to be in it, and I'm proud of what we did, but I don't see how we could do it again. There are many, many reasons I don't want to be in Mrs. Doubtfire 2. But they haven't even asked me [yet], so no need to worry."

Due to the tragic sudden death of Robin Williams, the future of 'Mrs Doubtfire 2' looks dim.
