The upcoming episode of the hit ABC series "Modern Family" will see if Alex (Ariel Winter) will follow Phil's (Ty Burrell) advice on whether to stay in the dorm or commute to school everyday.

Last episode, the college girl told her dad that instead of staying in campus, she preferred to commute. Phil paid her a visit, hoping to see how she was doing on her own without the constant help of the family. When Alex decided to get a dorm while studying, he was naturally concerned. She was their eldest child, and the thought of her living alone, away from him and her mother Claire (Julie Bowen), scared him. That was why he was surprise to hear her confession about wanting to go home.

When Phil asked why, Alex said she just does not fit in with the rest of her schoolmates. She admitted to feeling uncomfortable, and was smart enough to admit that the set up was not working for her. Phil tried to convince her that all college kids go through this feeling of not belonging anywhere. When he eventually left, leaving the package she thought was a special kind of headphones, Alex discovered that her dad gave her the gown and goggles needed to join the freshman tradition.

The episode ended on a positive note, with Alex leaping off a diving board, while her classmates cheered for her. It remains unsure, however, if she would heed her father's advice to wait a little before deciding. Will the applause be enough to change her mind about commuting? Phil learned a valuable lesson that day, when he came home to realize that it was time to let go of the ducks he previously saved. Just like with the fowls, he also needed to let his children spread their wings and do things on their own.

"Modern Family" season 7 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.
