Miracle in Belfast: Premature one-pound baby defies odds, surviving despite heart, eye surgeries

When a mother gave birth to a tiny baby weighing just one pound and half an ounce, doctors at a hospital in Belfast, Ireland, flatly told her the baby would not survive.

But God, the source of all Creation, had another thing in mind.

Miraculously, baby Meabh McArdle proved the doctors wrong and survive—despite undergoing heart surgery at just five weeks old and eye surgery at three months old, LiveActionNews reports.

Baby Meabh was born four months early, at 23 weeks and three days gestation. Doctors gave her 0-1 percent chance of survival.

In the United States, babies at Meabh's age and even older are legally aborted despite the fact that they are viable human beings. The abortion procedure is known as D&E, where the baby is pulled apart from the mother's womb limb by limb, causing great pain and suffering to the baby.

Fortunately, Meabh was born not in the U.S. but in Ireland.

Despite the doctors' dire prognosis, the baby's mother, Fionnuala McArdle, knew her baby was a fighter, just like her.

After suffering three miscarriages, Fionnuala endured surgery to fix a malformation in her uterus that split it into two, causing her to miscarry. Two months later she happily discovered she was pregnant.

However, things took a scary turn less than six months later when doctors discovered that McArdle was 2cm dilated with bulging membranes. She was quickly admitted to the hospital.

"I was told if my daughter was born at 22 weeks she would not survive," she said.

A few days later, McArdle gave birth to Baby Meabh who was immediately placed on a ventilator.

"She was one of the smallest babies [...] but now she is one of the biggest. She went from being one of the sickest to one of the best," said McArdle. "She was not supposed to be here but I would not give up on her after everything I had been through."

McArdle is so grateful to the neonatal intensive care staff at Royal Victoria Hospital that she opened a Crowdfunding page to raise money to help the hospital purchase equipment and help more premature babies survive.
