Miguel Cotto next fight rumors: Freddie Roach wants Juan Manuel Marquez fight

Miguel Cotto has been silently out of the limelight ever since losing to Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez back in November 2015.

Cotto lost via unanimous decision and it was, apparently, expected that the Puerto Rican pug's spirts were severely dampened by the outcome. But like most boxers who suffer from a disappointing outing, it may only be a matter of time before he regains his bearings and becomes ready to fight again.

Apparently, his trainer, Freddie Roach, knows that Cotto will come to his senses soon and is now looking at possible opponents for the former champion. Surprisingly, he has set his eyes on a familiar foe — Juan Manuel Marquez per Izquierdazo.com.

Marquez is no stranger to Roach. He faced him with Manny Pacquiao multiple times and may be looking for payback after "El Dinamita" knocked out Pacquiao back in 2012.

It is no secret that Roach had wanted another shot at Marquez. Another match involving Pacquiao didn't prosper, although pitting Cotto against the 42-year-old Mexican boxer could happen.

For now, however, that could be wishful thinking. Marquez has been out of action since 2014 with the Mexican brawler having issues with his knees. But the thing is, Marquez hasn't officially retired despite being egged on by his family to hang it all up.

If ever it materializes, there are some minor issues to kink out. Such include the catch weight that both fighters would agree on.

Marquez has never fought beyond 144.5 pounds and such could be a problem. Roach, however, guarantees that Cotto can trim down to as much as 147 pounds so it may depend on whether or not Marquez would be amenable to that weight limit.

Other possible names for Cotto have not been divulged for now, but it seems this is one fight that Roach wants to happen. He points out that fight involving Puerto Rico and Mexican would always be a great one to see, although there are some who believe he just wants to prove he can beat Marquez with any fighter he handles.
