Miguel Cotto next fight news: What lies ahead for ex-champion?

Miguel Cotto is back in Puerto Rico, disappointed with his unanimous decision loss at the hands of Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez last weekend.

Apparently, Cotto wasn't able to do enough to gain the nod of the judges but as far as he and trainer Freddie Roach are concerned, he would have either won or the disparity could not have been that wide if one is to take the score cards into consideration.

A look back showed that the judges were all in favor of Alvarez, 117–111, 118–110, and 119–109. Apparently it was Alvarez' aggressiveness and power that impressed the judges, despite the fact that Cotto did make a good account of himself. Plus the fact that the Mexican could only manage to stun the Puerto Rican but not really hurt him.

Regardless, all is in the past and what is important for Cotto is to plan his next step. At 35, he isn't exactly young anymore, although it seems that he will likely make a ring return soon.

Losing is nothing new to Cotto. He has been in the same situation before and just like that, he is back to his winning ways.

There is talk that Cotto could return to the 154-pound weight class. He has proven to be effective in various weight classes before, winning world titles at 140, 147, 154, and 160. Against Alvarez, he was smaller so a shift in weight class could be the agenda for Cotto and Roach in the coming days.

Once that is decided, perhaps the matter of whom he fights next will be next on the table. For now, there is no clear name being mentioned but the thing is, Cotto seems to be inclined to fight some more despite his age.

As to how long will depend on him. Cotto is far from calling it quits, not at the rate that he is showing the desire to continue boxing.
