Have the Los Angeles Lakers seen something in undrafted pick Jonathan Holmes deemed worthy of a multi-year deal?
If so, that could be the case. This is after the Lakers have reportedly signed the undrafted rookie who recently played for the Boston Celtics at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Holmes put up decent numbers, averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds last month.
According to the LA Times, Holmes' deal was for two years for about $1.4 million, $100,000 of which is guaranteed for the coming season.
More than that, one thing that the Lakers may have found handy on the part of Holmes is that he does have a good stroke from the three-point region and a nose for defense. The latter is, of course, something that head coach Byron Scott should approve.
But the journey is not yet over for Holmes. Heading into training camp, the undrafted player will have to compete for a spot in the regular roster. With a lot of forwards present, he will have to earn his slot to move on to the next phase.
Recall that the Lakers have the likes of Larry Nance Jr. and Anthony Brown around, two rookies who will vie for a roster spot as well. Cramping up his chances is the fact that last year's top pick Julius Randle is back in harness, shrinking his chances.
Not to be overlooked are other holdovers from last year. That includes Tarik Black and Ryan Kelly. Then there is new recruit Brandon Bass to add to that as well.
But then again, he wouldn't be invited over if the Lakers didn't see something special in him. He could be another Jordan Clarkson story, although Clarkson was drafted.
Holmes spent four season in Texas averaging 10.3 points and 6.1 rebounds.
