Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst, a teacher from Southern California, has been arrested after having sex with a 16-year-old student who fathered her child.

The 28-year-old teacher was arrested Monday evening after giving birth to a baby fathered by the student.

Whitehurst teaches 10th grade English at Citrus Valley High School and has been charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and has been bailed for $25,000.

The teacher allegedly had sexual intercourse with the unnamed student last year, when he was just 16-years-old. Her relationship with the minor, who is now 17, lasted a year, according to the Redlands Police Department.

The boy's mother contacted the Redlands United School District after she found out about the affair. The District then contacted the police.

Police allege that the child, born on June 18, was fathered by the 16-year-old.

Whitehurst has been placed on leave since her arrested earlier this week.

Sabine Robertson-Phillips, the Assistant School Superintendent, stated: "Nothing is as important to us as the safety of our students and the District takes this arrest very seriously. We are fully cooperating with police in their investigation of this matter."

Whitehurt has worked as an assistant soccer coach in 2010 and her father, Dale Whitehurst, served as principal of Brywn Mawr Elementary and Moore Middle schools in Redlands, according to PE.com.
