Ratings for the hit Showtime series "Homeland" will take a hit if Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) will not be returning for season 6.
As far as Movie News Guide is concerned, the showrunners of the political thriller series will be ill advised if they decide that one of the main characters will indeed turn up dead. Last season's finale suggests that Quinn finally let go of his precarious hold on life and left Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) grieving for him. Quinn suffered from a massive brain hemorrhage after being exposed to the debilitating effects of sarin gas. The last scene of the finale showed Carrie sitting beside a peaceful Quinn, as a white light flooded the room. Many posit that it was Quinn's soul saying goodbye to Carrie.
According to the website, Showtime will surely bring back the dynamic tandem after the finale episode hit an unprecedented viewership of 2.07 million. The figure was a huge jump from the usual 1.50 million the series usually enjoyed for season 5. This patronage is largely attributed to the explosive relationship between the two characters. If Quinn is indeed out of the picture, it will be difficult for Carrie alone to carry the storyline the show has been promoting its entire run, especially now that her journey will be as taxing as ever.
Series o-creator Alex Gansa has revealed to New York Times that season 5 was a walk in the park compared to what they have in store for Carrie in the next installment. Her bipolar disorder would also reportedly come into play, as she struggles with medication and in dealing with everything that has happened in her life. Gansa also shared that it was saddening to hear people saying her condition has become progressively irrelevant to the show.
"We tend every season to touch the subject of her condition, and to weave it into the story... The fact that she's bipolar is central to her character, speaks volumes about how she chooses to live her life, and it's one that we'll always come back to every year," he said.
If Quinn does return, it will also be interesting to see how their love story will work out. He already confessed to Carrie that he loved her in the season 5 finale. Will the next step be a proposal and then marriage?
"Homeland" season 6 is expected to premiere sometime within the year.
