The final dinner of the cannibalistic doctor on NBC's table was served last Saturday, but that doesn't mean Hannibal Lecter has run out of banquets to attend. Executive producer Bryan Fuller said that there are more of Lecter's gruesome tales to tell.
Fuller recently stopped by IGN to talk about Hannibal's future. There, he revealed that they are exploring the possibility of bringing the serial killer's story to the big screen, although he emphasized that it is still up to the reaction of the audience to the show's finale.
"There are conversations still ongoing and I'm mainly curious how the audience will react to this finale and what the audience will say," the EP said, adding that he is willing to continue the story if fans want more or end it if they are already satisfied by how things ended.
In elaborating more on the talk of a "Hannibal" film instead of a season 4, he told TV Line that "there is a plot point in the [Thomas Harris] novel Hannibal that has not been in any of the [filmed] adaptations" that he would like to tackle.
"And so, it's important for me to protect that and hopefully be able to tell it one day," Fuller said, adding that fans of the series are smart enough to figure out what this untranslated element from the book is without him having to say it.
In the same IGN interview, Fuller revealed his plan on doing "Silence of the Lambs" for "Hannibal" season 4 back when the show wasn't axed yet. This very plan actually takes into account a fifth run as well.
"We were going to re-address it if we had got a green light on Season 4, because Season 4 didn't involve 'Silence of the Lambs,' but it would allow us to grease the wheels and start preparing for a Season 5, so we were going to ask again," he explained.
He even suggested that a miniseries based on the aforementioned book could even happen on Starz if everything from the right holders to the story were all in place.
"Hannibal" season 4 was a frequent subject in the cast and crew's conversations. Hugh Dancy, who played Will in the series, recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that apart from the pleasure in doing the series, it is Fuller's plans on the fourth season that "sounded like so much fun" that makes him want to do more.
