'Grey's Anatomy' season 12 spoilers: what's next for Jackson and April

Fans of the Jackson-and-April team-up have reasons to be worried for the couple come "Grey's Anatomy" season 12. Show creator Shonda Rhimes recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the two "are in a difficult spot now" and it looks like it isn't a place they can easily get out from.

"April's really changed and she's really done this thing that's not necessarily the best thing for their marriage and Jackson's not happy about it. Does that mean it's over? And does she accept that it's over?" Rhimes asked during her chat with the site.

Whatever it is that's going to go down between April and Jackson in the upcoming season, Rhimes hinted that it won't be very brooding or weighty. In light of the recent events, with McDreamy's sudden death, Rhimes said that the new season will be "lighter."

"We found funny ways to tell what's a very emotional story — more of a charming way to tell an emotional story, but it is still emotional and they are still figuring it out. April is fighting for things to be better," she explained.

Rhimes doesn't have any concrete idea what will happen to April and Jackson in season 12 and in the seasons after that.

She told Entertainment Weekly, "I honestly haven't decided how it's going to turn out. I love them together, so we'll see."

As for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) who is still reeling from the death of her husband Derek, the new doctor on the block to be played by Martin Henderson is expected to fill the void and help her move on. But before that, Pompeo has already said that her character will gradually stand up for herself from the tragedy, adding that her story of surviving it is "worth telling."

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 premieres Sept. 24.
