Nobody wants to have a cracked screen on their smart phones, that is why New York glass maker Corning has recently announced the fifth iteration of their Gorilla Glass, which the company claims is stronger than its predecessor. Gorilla Glass 5 will offer better protection for the next generation of smartphones.
The company said that that over 85 percent of smartphone owners have dropped their phones at least once, while 55 percent of owners have dropped their phones more than three times. The global study that was conducted also mentioned that often times, phones are dropped between waist and shoulder height. Now, Corning has created a product that can withstand drops from 1.6 meters, and the Gorilla Glass 5 has a survival rate of up to 80 percent than other glass designs from competitors.
"Corning Gorilla Glass 5 raises the bar for protection against drops higher than ever, surviving 1.6-meter drops onto rough surfaces up to 80 percent of the time. Plus, even though it's our toughest cover glass yet, it still delivers the damage resistance, optical clarity, and touch sensitivity Gorilla Glass is famous for," the company said on its website.
John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning Gorilla Glass, said, "With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning's advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses."
Bayne added, "With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement."
Corning has been creating glass covers for devices for the past 10 years and protected more than 4.5 billion devices worldwide. These include more than 1,800 products of more than 40 major brands, including Samsung, HTC, Lenovo, Huawei, LG, HP and Asus. CNET added that Ford's 2016 GT model will have a Gorilla Glass windshield, and some banks will equip the display screen of their ATM machines with an antimicrobial variant of the Gorilla Glass.
Fab News reports that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will be the first smartphone to be equipped with the latest Gorilla Glass.
