With no opponent officially named yet to face Floyd Mayweather Jr., maybe one more name wouldn't hurt.
Robert Garcia, the trainer of Brandon Rios, seems to be batting for his boy as a possible opponent for Mayweather Jr. this coming September. Though it may be a bit of a long shot considering that one – he is not among the list of contenders and two – Mayweather seems to be decided to face Andre Berto, it would never hurt to try.
For folks who haven't heard, Rios was supposed to face off with Kell Brooks this September. But after the two camps reportedly failed to come to terms, the fight may be as good as dead.
Both camps reached a dead end due to two issues. One was reportedly tied up with the type of gloves that would be used while the other was about a rematch clause, which the Rios camp were not amenable to.
So with that issue left unresolved, Brooks could be looking to face someone else. Although no one has been closely linked thus far, the names of Amir Khan, Keith Thurman and Timothy Bradley Jr. have been up in the air as possible opponents.
Khan could be considered as a wise choice despite the fact that the British southpaw prefers not to face his countryman. Regardless, Khan did clarify that he would be interested in such, although both claims seem to be conflicting.
But with Khan believing that Berto has become the chosen one against Mayweather, perhaps he could reconsider that fight against Brook.
As far as Rios is concerned, the pitch is considered something a bit remote. For one, Mayweather is not exactly fond of dealing with Rios' promoter, Bob Arum. So unless something surprising happens, this match is a pretty long shot.
On the realistic end, there have been names lined up for Rios whom the American boxer could possibly face before the year ends. Those mentioned include Lucas Matthyse, Ruslan Provodnikov, Jesse Vargas and Timothy Bradley Jr., all of whom have been confirmed as possibly opponents by Garcia.
