Falklands memorial unveiled at National Arboretum

A memorial commemorating the servicemen and women who died in the Falklands War has been unveiled at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.

A service held to dedicate the memorial was led by the Rev David Cooper and attended by more than 600 service veterans and their families.

The unveiling coincides with the 30th anniversary of the task force landings on the island.

A solo was sung during the service by Kathryn Nutbeem, daughter of Major Roger Nutbeem, who was killed when the ship Sir Galahad was sunk by Argentinian forces.

After the service, there was a flyover by a Vulcan bomber flown by the pilot who had led a raid on Port Stanley’s runway.

Earlier in the month, a memorial service was held at Portsmouth Cathedral to commemorate those who died.

The sermon was preached by Canon Roger Devonshire, who was a naval chaplain for 24 years and was on board HMS Hermes during the conflict.
