East Belfast Church is Vandalised

St Matthew's Church on Bryson Street in east Belfast has been attacked.

Paint was thrown at it on Tuesday night, and its walls and a stained glass window were damaged.

PSNI Inspector David Muir said, "Police would condemn this incident and the actions of those behind it.

"At this stage we would be looking at a possible sectarian motive, however all lines of inquiry will be followed up as part of the investigation.

"An attack on any place of worship is reprehensible and police would call on anyone within the local community who has information about this attack to come forward and speak to police at Strandtown or Crimestoppers."

Sinn Fein councillor Joe O'Donnell appealed for calm in the area following the attack.

Some people are linking it to the vandalisation on a nearby memorial on Monday and police are also investigating the link.

On Monday night, green paint was poured over the memorial for James McCurrie and Robert Neill, who were killed by the IRA on the Newtownards Road in 1970. Wreaths in dedication to them were also desecrated in the attack.
