The "Dragon Ball" franchise will have another anime series, "Dragon Ball Super," and new reports claim that a manga adaptation is also in the works.
Anime News Network spotted a report from the upcoming July issue of Shueisha's V Jump magazine saying that "Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'" manga artist Toyotarō will work on the manga for the next anime series. Original creator Akira Toriyama will also work on its original story.
According to the article, Toyotarō will be releasing the manga through an extra-large edition of the V Jump magazine for August. However, no details were given regarding the plot of both the manga and the upcoming anime.
Meanwhile, according to earlier reports, Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki revealed that the soon-to-be released "Dragon Ball Super" will have a new antagonist described as fiercer than Frieza and Majin Buu.
"As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand," the TV exec stated. "An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear ..."
"Dragon Ball Super" will feature the return of Toriyama in the best-selling franchise that he had written and illustrated back in 1984. The most recent anime from the franchise, "Dragon Ball GT," veered away from his original manga arc.
Toriyama will be joined by Toei Animation director Kimitoshi Chioka to helm the new series, while Nozaki, Naoko Sagawa, and Atsushi Kido will help in producing the show.
"Dragon Ball Super" will reportedly have around 100 episodes, and it will focus on Goku's adventures in keeping the peace in the universe several years after he defeated Majin Buu. Goku will be joined by some of the most iconic characters from the series, including his son Gohan, Vegeta and his son Trunks, Gohan's son Goten, and enemy-turned-friend Piccolo.
"Dragon Ball Super" is slated to be released in Japan beginning July this year, but the international release date is still unannounced.
