Conor McGregor has done the improbable and UFC president Dana White credits that as a possible niche that could see him holding two division titles soon.
This has something to do, of course, with all plans of seeing the Irishman move up to the UFC lightweight division where he will most likely get new challenges. And at the front of it all is no less than the champion Rafael dos Anjos.
After that spectacular win over Jose Aldo at UFC 194, which ended in record time (13 seconds), "The Notorious" is looking for something bigger by moving up a division.
But under normal circumstances, doing so would mean having to vacate his previous title, which McGregor has no plans of doing. White just made it easier for the Irishman with plans of exempting McGregor from that traditional rule, according to MMA Fighting.
This means that even if McGregor moves up, he will still technically be the UFC featherweight champion. Hence, it may end up as a champion vs. champion match, though the UFC lightweight title will be the only one up for grabs.
There is no question that McGregor is one of the top stars in the UFC right now so giving him that privilege will, of course, benefit the company.
So the next question is, will his success radiate to a heavier weight category?
Dos Anjos is apparently ready for his coming and is actually waiting for the brash-talking Irishman. It will be an interesting joust with McGregor needing to bulk up and try to see how he can fare against bigger and heavier opponents.
As far as the featherweight division is concerned, Frankie Edgar is the top opponent for "The Notorious." He is lined up as the next opponent, though their showdown could likely depend on which the UFC decides to do first.
