Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) may have survived his harrowing ordeal in "Chicago Fire," as the promo photos released by NBC show him lying in a hospital bed and looking conscious of his surroundings.

The image that CarterMatt posted is good news for fans of the hit drama series who worried that the character will end up dying after being the victim of a surprise stabbing. Herrmann was knifed by Freddie (Ralph Rodriguez) in Molly Patron's (Giota Trakas) kitchen during the midseason finale. He looked like he was a goner when the boys rushed him to the hospital. It appears, though, that he is made of sterner stuff, or else the doctors in "Chicago Med" has done a great job in patching him up.

In the photo, Herrmann is propped up in his hospital bed and hooked to an IV. His friends have come to pay him a visit. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) is in the foreground, as he is seen leaning as if checking on his colleague. While Herrmann still looks weak, fans will be happy to note that their beloved character appears to be in stable condition.

The upcoming episode titled "The Beating Heart" is the first of the three-part crossover among the NBC shows. Aside from the residents of "Med," it is expected that Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and his men from "Chicago PD" will also be seen in the episode. They will reportedly work with Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), as they track down Freddie.

Meanwhile, series creator Matt Olmstead told The Hollywood Reporter that aside from Herrmann's predicament, another plotline to look forward to in the crossover was Voight's backstory in "PD." He said that most of the detective's story would be focusing on his deceased wife.

"The one personal piece of storytelling it unearths is Voight's back-story with his late wife. We've established that she died years prior to when he appeared on 'Fire,' but not the circumstances of her death and what Voight has to deal with in terms of dealing with that memory," he said.

"Chicago Fire" season 4 will return with a three-way crossover with "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Med" on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
