Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton thanks God after surviving accident

Cam Newton is filled with gratitude and positivity after his brush with death on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers quarterback survived what could easily have been a fatal accident when his car flipped four times. The incident, which involved two vehicles, occurred around 12:30pm on the Church Street Bridge over Interstate 277.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton said he was driving south on Church when he saw a Buick sedan pull out and attempt to cross Church.

The quarterback said he tried to avoid the car, but the Buick "clipped the back of my truck." The impact of the collision caused Newton's black pickup truck to overturn.

Newton feels blessed for escaping the serious accident with relatively minor injuries. The Carolina Panthers reported on the team's Twitter account that the quarterback suffered two fractures in his lower back and no internal injuries.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department crash report, Newton was driving at the posted speed limit of 35 mph during the time of the accident.

The 25-year-old Atlanta native took to Facebook to post this message: "I do not know where to begin because by the look of that picture someone is supposed to be dead or severely injured worse than what I am right now!

"While I am resting up, the thought that keeps flashing in my mind is that GOD IS GOOD and someone has (their) protective hands on my life shielding me from any danger that may come my way!"

Newton was released from the Carolinas Medical Center on Wednesday. The former Westlake High School star was back at the Bank of America Stadium on Thursday, just 48 hours after the incident that left his truck totalled.

According to NFL.com, the quarterback told reporters during a quick press conference, "I'm on somebody's fantasy team, and I think it's the man upstairs."

Newton will sit out Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Asked about his return to the lineup, Newton appears unworried.

"As far as when I'm coming back, who cares?" Newton said. "That's not something that I'm worried about right now. I'm just thankful to have breath in my lungs so I can breathe again."
