Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez is standing pat on his earlier stance — no 155-pound catchweight, no fight.
While everyone is eager to find out whom Alvarez faces for his voluntary fight on May 7, it seems that the Mexican brawler has made up his mind on what comes next.
Everyone knows that talks between his camp and mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin start after his Cinco de Mayo tiff, and many are, of course, hoping he changes his mind about implementing a catchweight for that looming blockbuster fight for 2016.
A report from BoxingScene seems to have answered that as early as now, and it is something boxing fans will not be too happy about. As it turns out, Alvarez seems to be ready to vacate the World Boxing Council (WBC) lineal title rather than give his opponent the advantage over him.
Alvarez wants a 155-pound catchweight in play, but Golovkin is in no way required to heed that call. He is the mandatory challenger and he wants to fight at the full middleweight limit which is 160 pounds. The WBC is not expected to recognize Alvarez' demands as well.
So as things stand now, Golovkin may end up being full champion since he stands to win by default if Alvarez opts not to face him.
If so, such should be a disappointing development since it's one fight that many people want to see.
Alvarez has, apparently, learned his lesson when he adjusted to the catchweight set by Floyd Mayweather Jr. when both fought back in 2013. Alvarez simply struggled at that time and turned out a pretty poor performance. Alvarez wants to avoid that from happening again.
But the reality of it all is that Alvarez needs to understand the division where he is fighting. If he wants to reign as a true champion and face other bigger fighters, he needs to learn to fight at perhaps the maximum weight limit for him to cement his place in the company of big name fighters in the middleweight division.
