Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is busy filling up the undercards for the upcoming fight between Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez and Amir Khan slated for May 7, and one possible pairing could see two fighters under his stable.
Per USA Today, De La Hoya is reportedly working on a possible Lucas Matthysse vs. Mauricio Herrera undercard, which he hopes can make the upcoming event a big one.
Matthysse will try to get back on track after losing to Viktor Postol last October 2015. At the time, it was believed that Matthysse may have been distracted when he was mentioned as a possible opponent for Pacquiao's farewell fight this April.
The Argentine boxer has yet to figure prominently in title matches. Other than that loss to Postol, he previously lost to Danny Garcia in September 2013.
Matthysse seemed to have gotten over that stunning loss to Postol and hinted of possibly training alongside the Mexican brawler Alvarez.
Unfortunately, Alvarez' trainer said that there may not be enough time to assist the Argentine pug with the focus on the Mexican's tiff for May 7, as reported by BoxingScene.com.
Like Matthysse, Herrera has never won a world title. Even though he rose in 2014, he did incur two losses that year. He lost to Jose Benavidez and ironically against Garcia too.
In 2015, Herrera was hardly active. His only fight was that technical decision he copped at the expense of Hank Lundy.
After a thorough look at the two fighters, Matthysse and Herrera both want to get back on track and make another run for a possible title shot. Seeing the talent of both boxers, their clash could be a fitting complement to the big Alvarez vs. Khan fight.
If it should be made, it technically makes the May 7 fight a double-main event (of sorts) seeing the talent that will get it on at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
