Boxing news: Lucas Matthysse plans jump to welterweight division

Nothing much has been heard of Argentinian pug Lucas Matthysse since losing to Viktor Postol back in October until now.

Matthysse is trying to regain his bearings back and, apparently, the former interim World Boxing Council (WBC) junior welterweight champion is not about to call it a day. In fact, a report from Boxing Scene reveals that Matthysse is already mapping out plans to move up to welterweight in 2016.

Matthysse was an option for Manny Pacquiao before losing to Postol, something that many believed distracted him and cost him the then-vacant 140-pound title and resulted in his first career defeat.

Making matters worse was that Matthysse suffered an eye injury in the process. He admitted not being able to see Postol's punches and opted to stay down to take the full count (and loss) rather than suffer more injuries.

It was one of the shockers in boxing for 2015 and such resulted in his spiraling hopes of catching up with the big names of boxing. And now, he has to play catch-up once again and hopefully he carves out a name for himself in the 147-pound class.

In the welterweight division, Matthysse could go after familiar names who have made the jump ahead of him.

Danny Garcia is one of them as well as Terence Crawford and Ruslan Provodnikov. But other than that, problems could be forthcoming, all tied up with issues involving the promotional banner he fights for.

Matthysse is under Golden Boy Promotions and most of the fighters in the welterweight division are under Al Haymon who doesn't exactly have a good working relationship with his promotional arm.

Regardless, Matthysse and his camp are likely to deal with that when they get there. The important thing now is that he wants to rebound from a sorry loss to Postol and hopefully vie for a title once again.
