Being nice vs being Godly: 10 Bible verses on cultivating Christian character

There is more to being a Christian than being nice.

It can be easy to think that as long as we are nice to be people, we are doing our good Christian duty. The reality is that God is less interested in our actions and more on our motivations. Rather than focusing on being "nice" to people, these Bible verses teach us how to develop our character in a deeper way.

1. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law (Galatians 5: 22-23).

2. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful (Colossians 3: 12-15).

3. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love (1 John 4:8).

4.  Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean (Matthew 23: 25-26).

5. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out (Proverbs 10:9).

6. I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music. I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? Will walk with integrity of heart within my house (Psalm 101:1-2).

7. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us (Titus 2:7-8).

8. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2).

9. Do to others as you would have them do to you (Luke 6:31).

10. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love (2 Peter 1: 5-7).
