Android 6.0 update news: Xperia Z3 to receive Marshmallow OTA this month?

While users have already experienced how the new Google mobile OS will work with Sony Xperia mobile devices such as the Z3, many are still wondering when the Xperia Z3 will get the full bundle of the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow platform. The latest rumors suggest that device owners will not have that long to wait.

According to a report by VCPost, the new Android 6.0 update is bound for an OTA version rollout for the Xperia Z3 iteration this month. While Sony Mobile has yet to comment on the rumors, analysts have apparently predicted the rollout based on Sony's move to put the Xperia Z3 as the first flagship in the Concept for Android program.

Back in July, the tech giant launched Concept for Android, a beta program for select Xperia owners to get a first glimpse of how new Android platform releases will look on Sony Mobile devices. The company then rolled out a beta build of Android Marshmallow overlaid with homegrown UI for Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact users in select locations such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Germany.

Since it has already been around six months since the test build rolled out, observers are expecting Sony Mobile to roll out an official full version of the Android M build, at least for the Xperia Z3. The more tech-savvy users who can't wait for the official OTA version can manually upload Android M in their Xperia Z3 by flashing.

For now, while waiting for the expected Android M rollout, Xperia Z3 users recently received a surprise update – a new firmware version based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The new patch, update 23.4.A.1.164, patched up the dreaded Stagefright loophole recently discovered in Android devices. This makes the Xperia Z3 integrate a more robust security against Stagefright, a vulnerability that hackers exploit to get media-related access without the user's consent.
