Microsoft has already announced a new upgrade for its current-gen console, and the Xbox One S is now available. Meanwhile, although Sony has let it slip that a PS4 Neo is in the works, the tech giant has yet to come out with a release date.

How do these two interim upgrades stack up against each other?

The two are considered to be in-between updates and not direct follow-ups to the current-gen Xbox One and PS4. Although another Xbox console – Project Scorpio – is in the works, speculations suggest that it will still take some years before fans can see upgrades suited to be dubbed the "Xbox Two" and "PlayStation 5."

Meanwhile, although both consoles are only considered step-up versions, the Xbox One S and PS4 Neo feature tweaked improvements and marked upgrades over their "predecessors."

The Xbox One S is significantly lighter and slimmer than the original Xbox One, and Microsoft has even stated that the new console is at least 40 percent thinner than the other platform. In addition, one marked change for the Slim version is it is made more compact and mobile – the console already has an onboard power brick. In addition, the Xbox One S already has marked upgrades for its GPU and CPU levels, as well as maximum storage for up to 2TB.

Meanwhile, Sony has yet to come out with confirmed details on the PS4 Neo. According to speculations, the PS4 Neo has been upgraded as a compatible platform for the upcoming PlayStation VR headset, and may even launch together with the VR system accessory. This means that the upcoming mid-upgrade can support VR content. The Xbox One S, on the other hand, can only go as high as 4K and HDR gaming, since Microsoft decided that VR support will be featured for its upcoming mystery upgrade, the Project Scorpio.
