Although Nina Dobrev's return as Elena Gilbert in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 is not confirmed yet, the premiere of the final season of the supernatural drama still makes her presence felt.

This will also be the case in episode 2, titled "Today Will Be Different," where the series will show Elena but only through the use of old clips featuring the character.

In this "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 episode, the siren, presumably Sybil (Nathalie Kelley), conditions the minds of Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

There, it will be revealed that there is actually a way for them to escape her control. "Where does your subconscious go when you try to resist me?" the siren asks Damon in the promo.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 episode 2 preview then cuts to a scene inside Damon's consciousness, where he relives a memory when he was with Elena. However, the siren was also there, just behind Damon. Fans fear that she will trifle with the memories Damon has of Elena so that he could no longer defy her.

Executive producer Julie Plec recently told TV Line that Elena indeed "has a very strong presence this season, in the entire season, similarly to how she did last year."

Her appearance in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8, episode 2 from an old footage is just the beginning as the EP hopes to bring Dobrev for new clips.

"Because it's the last season, we get to deliver on all the things we've been keeping a nice Santa's wish list of," Plec said, calling the season "the year of finallys."

One of the goals is, of course, for Dobrev to reprise her role for the last time. It looks like Plec has been working hard to make that happen, so fans would want to stay tuned as she might save Elena's reappearance for last.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 episode 2, "Today Will Be Different," airs on Friday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
