'The Vampire Diaries' season 6 finale spoilers: Is Elena going to die in 'I'm Thinking of You All The While?'

The moment "The Vampire Diaries" fans have been both unwilling and curious to see has come at last. Elena's departure from the well-loved series will finally go down. This has induced speculations and theories about how actress Nina Dobrev's exit from the show will come about.

Many initially believed that Elena would not be killed off from the show and that a more appropriate exit would be for her to become what she always wanted to be — a human, with her transformation prompting her to leave Mystic Falls for good. However, the previous episode hints that the only way Elena would find her way out is, after all, death. In the penultimate installment, Elena was stabbed by Kai. He returned from year 1903 to go after Damon and Bonnie, who put him in a horrifying place while they were stuck there.

The promo for the finale, which is titled "I'm Thinking of You All The While," shows an enraged Damon, who is fuming after failing to save his beloved girlfriend from harm. Also, the footage strongly hints at the show's ultimate sendoff. The gang is shown gathering around a casket, where Elena is believed to be resting after being unable to survive Kai's evil doing.

The ending for season 6 is, of course, a different one as executive producer Julie Plec imagined it would be, telling EW that they had two pitches for the conclusion of the current season.

"We had one for our cliffhanger ending that leaves everybody's life in the balance and then we spend the first part of next season saying goodbye to our character, or we have the, 'Well, she's leaving, so therefore the entire thing we were going to do for half of next season, we now have to do in one episode, and our cliffhanger can no longer be a cliffhanger, which means it has to be the penultimate episode'," she said.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 6 finale will air on May 14.
