'The Uncharted' movie release date news 2018: Movie adaptation to focus on Nathan Drake's origin story

It has been quite a long time since we heard anything that indicates "progress" from the planned movie adaptation of DICE's "The Uncharted." And obviously, it is not moving in the quickest pace seeing as it has been three years since its initial announcement and no notable news indicating the start of production or filming has been confirmed.

In a panel during DICE Summit 2018, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann shared his opinions regarding the delay of the film, and how delighted he is on movie helmer Shawn Levy's plans of not adapting any of the video games into the eventual film.

According to Druckmann, instead of adapting one of "The Uncharted" titles, Levy's route will take a different turn involving a young Nathan Drake (the series protagonist) -- and his origins.

"We've had some conversations with Shawn Levy, and he's really passionate, gets it, and I think he understands where we're at. [Levy] wanting to tell a different story than the main four adventures with potentially a young Nathan Drake that fills in the gaps, I think is a lot more interesting than trying to retell Uncharted 1, 2, 3, or 4," Druckmann explained.

He also noted that before, he and his team were excited about "The Uncharted" gracing screens worldwide as a movie. But as the years went on, his feelings have changed. Druckmann disclosed that he feels that they have done a great job of telling "The Uncharted's" story cinematically through the game -- a direct adaptation would not add anything else that is not already out there.

"We used to just be excited--oh my god, movies are looking at us! There could be an Uncharted movie on the screen, and then as more time passes on, we're not excited by a direct adaptation of the story we told, because we feel we've already told that story very well cinematically, so I don't know what else you could bring to it," the creative director emphasized.

In recent news, Marvel Universe's Spider-Man, Tom Holland, has been tapped to play the younger iteration of Nathan Drake. As mentioned previously, Levy's movie will not be game-straight-to-movie kind of thing, but it will be an origin story of sorts that will focus on aspects of Drake that are not present in the games.

Elsewhere, Druckmann also talked about the script he worked on for the direct adaptation of "The Last of Us" game, wherein, he said that now that he has taken time away from it, it does not feel right.

"Now, having some separation from it, I look back like--I don't want that movie to be made."

The film adaptation has no confirmed release date, as of present time, after Sony pulled it out of its initial release schedule of June 2017 back in 2016.
