'The Flash' season 3 spoilers, news: Mark Hamill plays the Trickster again

A promotional still from "The Flash" featuring actor Mark Hamill as the Trickster The CW

"The Flash" has always featured actor Mark Hamill, known primarily for portraying Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" films, in at least one episode where he plays James Jesse, also known as the Trickster. New set photos for "The Flash" season 3 confirm that he will be continuing this tradition, but it won't be in a way that the Trickster fans became familiar with.

The photos were posted on Twitter. One of the two images showcases the Trickster holding a Tommy gun, while the other reveals that he is wearing chalk-white makeup and a purple pinstripe suit. This is a notable departure from the costume that the Trickster wore in seasons 1 and 2.

It is further pointed out that this new design is remarkably similar to how the Joker looks in some video games like "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and "Batman: Arkham City." It is also similar to how the Joker looked in "Batman: The Animated Series," "Justice League," and in "Batman: The Killing Joke."

Fans of Mark Hamill will find this intriguing as he had voiced the Joker for all of the aforementioned cartoon series, animated film, and games. Hamill is also known as an actor who portrayed the Joker for a long time, second only to actor Caesar Romero who played the Joker in the 1960s "Batman" series starring Adam West.

According to Screen Rant, this may be because Hamill is portraying the Earth-3 version of the Trickster and not the more familiar Earth-1 version seen in previous seasons. Because of this, the redesign may be changed, and it appears that the show is not just paying tribute to Hamill as the Trickster but also for his portrayal of the Joker.

Further implying that this is an Earth-3 Trickster, redesigned similarly to the Joker is the fact that one of the images show John Wesley Shipp in costume, portraying the Earth-3 Jay Garrick, also known as Flash.

Screen Rant speculates this episode, with Earth-3 Flash and Trickster, is likely to be the mid-season finale, although this is yet to be confirmed.
